  • April 1: Interview, assistance, Peter Sculthorpe and crew filming at Aptos for Australian Broadcasting
  • April 23: Tuning concert, UC Santa Cruz, Lou and Bill play.
  • April 24: Tuning concert, Monterey, Lou and Bill play.
  • April 25-May 7: At Community Hospital, Santa Cruz, for triple-bypass heart surgery.
  • July 10-12: Record Canticle #3, Ariadne, and Summerfield Set for Music Masters with Leta Miller, Willie Winant, and Nohema Fernandez, Davies cond. At UCSC.
  • July 20-30: Cabrillo Music Festival: Grand Duo performed at Aptos, (Dennis Russell Davies and Romuald Tecco); Solstice at Paul Masson Vinyards, Davies cond., Canticle #3, Ken Harrison cond.
  • July 31: At UCSC Solstice recorded, Davies cond.
  • August 3-8 Ravinia Dell Festival, Chicago, Davies cond. Third Symphony and Grand Duo (Davies and Tecco); also Harrison played in gamelan concert with Gamelan Si Betty (Trish Neilsen, cond.) For the Pleasure of Ovids Chances, Gendinq in Honor of Aphrodite (new version), and Gendinq Dennis.
  • August 4: Interviewed along with William Colviq by Studs Terkel for his radio show of August 7.
  • September 14-17: At University of Miami, Festival Miami residency. Performed: Suite for Cello and Harp and Concerto for Violin and Percussion

  • November 6-12: University of Alaska, Fairbanks lectures, concert, radio. Gamelan Degung brought; perhaps the first ever gamelan performance in Alaska.
  • November 16: Lectures at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
  • November 18: "La Koro Sutro" performed at Nipomo.

1990

  • January 13: Premiere of "Soediatmoko Set", commissioned by Peter Poole of Edmonton, Alberta, for the Soedjatmoko family in Jakarta. Louis and Clarke University, Portland, Ore.
  • March 1: Lecture at California Institute of the Arts, Valencia.
  • March 16-17: Composer judging, Colorado Arts Commission, Denver.
  • April 3: Premiere "Trio", Miracourt Trio comm., Da Camera Soc., Houston
  • May 12: Guest at Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright center at Scottsdale, Arizona. "Ariadnel'" performed by Eva Soltes.
  • July 29: "Third Symphony" final piece of Cabrillo Music Festival.
  • August 6-10: Mills College, Oakland, gamelan workshop.
  • November 2: Premiere, "Last Symphony" (#4), Brooklyn Philharmonic. (Also performances on the 3rd and 4th.)
  • November8: Grand Duo recorded at SUNY Purchase, New York
  • November10: Lecture, School of Architecture, Notre Dame University.

1991

  • January 23-27: Lectures and concerts at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.
  • February 1: Attend Trio performance at Los Angeles County Museum.
  • April 22-24: Lectures and concerts at University of Arizona, Tuscon.
  • April26-28: Again a guest at Taliesin West. Gamelan demonstration.
  • June 10: "Lifetime Achievement Award" bestowed by San Francisco Bay Guardian.
  • July 27: Panel, Cabrillo Music Festival.
  • August 10-11: Record gamelan at San Jose State Univ. for two CDs, MusicMasters.
  • August 21-December: Teach World Music class. Cabrillo College, Aptos.
  • September 4: Opening of new studios of radio station KPFA in Berkeley with commission "Homage to Pacifica".
  • September6: Featured at Bowling Green University, Ohio. Panel and talks. gamelan music, including a premiere.
  • October 13: LH work performed at New Music Works concert, Santa Cruz.
  • November 15: Lecture at San-Francisco Conservatory.
  • November 20-21: Percussive Arts Society at Disneyland Hotel--all Harrison percussion concert including gamelan.
  • November 12: Attended "Seven Pastorales" recording for MusicMaster label at White Plains, NY.

1992

  • January 16: PBS TV crew at residence.
  • January 21-27: Cornish College in Seattle. Lou Harrison-John Cage birthday celebration. Three concerts with Cage. Talks and public appearances.
  • January 29-30: Attend Atlanta Symphony with Ursula Oppens playing "Piano Concerto".
  • February 12-13: State Arts Commission of Arizona, Phoenix. Composition judglng.
  • February 23: New Music Works--LH Birthday concert, Aptos.
  • February 29: Camellia Symphony, Sacramento. LH composition played.
  • February 23-28: Portland, Ore. birthday concerts.
  • March 30: California Institute of the Arts concert and panel at Japan Center, Los Angeles. LH played.

  • September 24: Resume teaching at Cabrillo College. -- Book of Lou Harrison poetry, "Joys and Perplexities, in LH font, published. A project of Jargon Society, UCSC Special Collections, and Cabrillo Music Festival.
  • October 18: Lou reads poetry at Different Light bookstore, San Francisco.
  • November 9: With William Colvig on "Closet-free Radio" show, KZSC Santa Cruz.
  • November 20: Poetry reading, McHenry Library, UCSC, with Jack and Adele Foley. All-Harrison birthday concert, UCSC.
  • November 21-22: Recording for Music Masters label at UCSC.
  • November 21: Narrated with Wm. Colvig in LH "Suite from the Marriage At the Eiffel Tower"with Santa Cruz County Symphony.
  • December 23: "Tandy's Tango", written for Tandy Beal , played at Pickle Family Circus. During 1992 and continuing: a Lou Harrison documentary, "Cherish, Conserve, Consider, Create" film by Eric Marin shown on public television.

1993

  • January -- An all-Canada, two-hour broadcast, all Lou Harrison,
  • January 4: Radio interviewith theCanadian Broadcasting Corp. "Two New Hours"
  • January 14: "Set for Four Haisho with Two Percusionists" commissioned by National Theater of Japan, premiered in Tokyo. (panpipes).
  • January 25: Begin teaching gamelan class for Cabrillo College.
  • February 6: Took part in Yale's Oral History Project, with Vivian Perlis at Music Library Assn. conference at St. Francis Hotel, S.F. LH gamelan piece played at banquet.
  • February 13: Keynote speaker at Sonneck Society conference as Asilomar. Honorary membership bestowed.
  • February 27-28:"Third Symphony" performed by California Symphony in Concord.
  • April 4: "Suite for Cello and Harp" at New Music Works, Santa Cruz.
