The School of Music
and Dance's undergraduate degrees are 120/132 unit programs
designed to be completed in a four year term of study. The
School of Music and Dance's obligation to this assumes a full-time,
15-16 unit load for eight consecutive semesters. The School
of Music and Dance is a full member of the National Association
of the Schools of Music, the National Association of Schools
of Dance, and the National Association of Teacher Education.

The Director
The Director's name is Dr. Edward C. Harris. If you need

Music Office The School of Music and Dance is located near the corner
of San Carlos and 7th Street in downtown San Jose, adjacent
to the SJSU Events Center. The Office is located in Room
#179 in the front of the Music Building and is open Monday

Music Use Fee All Music Majors and Minors must pay a music equipment
fee of $30 each semester they are enrolled at San Jose State
University. Other non-music majors enrolled in performing
ensembles or any electro-acoustic music, recording or Music
10A, 10B, 19, 117, & 120 courses must also pay a fee of $20.00. The receipt must
be brought to the Music Office before completing University
registration. Applied music instruction will not be authorized
until this fee is paid.
Music Placement Auditions
All new Music Majors must take a performance audition and
a major ensemble audition before completing registration.
Without a placement audition, students cannot be officially
accepted as Music Majors. Auditions in the Performance Areas
(below) are held during registration week. More information
regarding auditions is available in the Student
Handbook.

Major Ensembles All undergraduate majors must be enrolled in a major ensemble
each semester they are enrolled in the School of Music and
Dance. All students taking Applied Studio Lessons must be
enrolled in a major ensemble. Graduate students may apply
three units of ensemble credit to the graduate requirement
of 30 units.

Music Systems/Theory Placement Examination All new and transfer music majors are required to take
the Music Systems Placement Examination, which is scheduled
during the orientation period before each semester. This
Placement Examination determines which course within the
Music Systems area each student can enroll. Check the class schedule for date, time and location
of this examination

Applied Lessons These are arranged with your particular instructor who
will be assigned to you after your placement audition.
Advisors All undergraduate students will be advised or assigned

Education Coordinator.
Honors Program The Music Honors Program is designed for students who have
outstanding talent and scholastic ability. It is open to
Senior Music Majors with a 3.5 GPA in the major courses
plus an overall university GPA of 3.0.
Approval by the student's major advisor and the School
Director is required prior to registering for honors courses.

Student Organizations
- Mu Phi Epsilon
Mu Phi Epsilon is one of several professional music
fraternities. Direct questions regarding the organization
to the School of Music and Dance Office or check the Mu
Phi Epsilon Bulletin Board near Room 150 for further information.
- MENC Student Chapter
The Music Educators National Conference has an active
chapter at SJSU. All students who plan to teach in public
schools, universities, or private studios are encouraged
to join. Membership includes the California Music Education
Conferences (CMEA), monthly dinner meetings with speakers
and a monthly journal. The advisor is Dr.

- ACDA Student Chapter
The student chapter of the American Choral Directors
Association is an active student organization in the School
of Music and Dance. Activities include conventions, workshops,
reading sessions, student conducting clinics, festivals,
guest speakers/performance groups, as well as monthly

Special Collections
- The Beethoven Center
The Ira
F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies, which opened
in 1985, contains the nation's largest collection of Beethoven
scores, manuscripts, letters and original folios. The
Center is located in the Walquist Library North (Fourth
and San Fernando Streets). Further detailed information
is available by calling Dr.
William Meredith, (Director) or Patricia Elliott (Curator)
at (408) 808-2056.
- Resource Center
The Resource Center contains performance ensemble
scores, as well as scores, recordings, and videos for
in-house use by students and faculty. Copies of students'
Master's Theses are also housed in the Center. The Resource
Center is located in Room #114 within the School of Music
and Dance. Hours vary by semester and inter-session; please
call first at (408) 924-4639.
